Absolutely fabulous place! I had this bookmarked on my phone for a couple of weeks. It's authentic Costa Rican food. I always wanted to try it. I ordered the guacamole while I waited for my food for take out. The guacamole was great, nice lime and pepper flavor. I ordered the tilapia a la plancha (which I think means grilled). It was so good and a great large portion. I will be back soon! Tip: they only speak Spanish, wasn't a problem for me but just a heads up.

On my way home from work I was feeling hungry but I didn't know for what... I opened up my Yelp! app to help me make a decision. Puerto Viejo was the second on the list and decided that it would be my landing spot. The restaurant doesn't have much curb appeal but it serves up some really good food. The menu is extensive and I didn't know what/how I should've ordered. I saw on Yelp! that the Chifrijo (chicharron - fried pork belly, over a bed of rice and beans); so, I ordered that. I asked for a recommendation, and ordered a guacamole appetizer. The restaurant was mostly full, and all the dishes that came out looked pretty good, especially the ceviche. The have a soda fridge with Coke products and they serve fresh coffee too Today, I wasn't in the mood for rice and beans. So, I mostly just ate the chicharrón from the Chifrijo plate. Next time, depending on my mood, maybe I'll just order the chcharrón app. The guac was certainly made fresh to order. It was light yet tasty; definitely order again. The cherry on top for me was that everyone was a Spanish speaker, which allowed/forced me to use my Spanish! I was pleasantly surprised and I would definitely go back.

This was such a great find! It was the perfect hole-in-the-wall, and surprisingly cute and quaint. The food is authentic and hearty. Come hungry! I saw that everyone from the Yelp community was getting the chifrijo and I just couldn't resist trying it. Guys, it was so good! It's fried pork over rice and beans and avocado on top. It's listed as an appetizer but you could totally get it as an entree too and be full. Best of all, it was only $6. They also had larger plates all ranging from $10-13. And these large plates come with lots of options and lots of food! I also got the fajitas (being not so adventurous) but it definitely hit the spot. Lots of vegetables, and not too salty. The one thing was- the server didn't speak English. Though it made for a truly authentic experience, if your Spanish is limited or rusty like mine, it is challenging to communicate your order and needs. But don't let that stop you from enjoying scrumptious foods. It's just an opportunity to learn and experience more than what's on the table
